  • A Flexible Packaging Solutions company based in Flintshire are looking for a Shift Team Leader.

Job Overview:

  • The role of the shift leader is to align the work of the operators on shift to the FOCUS objectives. Central to this is to lead, manage and motivate a shift to take responsibility for their own areas and ensure all activities are being carried out to a satisfactory level.  Key areas of responsibility include health & safety, people and performance management, quality and waste, effective utilisation of labour and deliver to customer requirements. To enhance manufacturing performance through the introduction of lean manufacturing principles and develop and implement continuous improvement plans and develop a flexible and competent multi skilled workforce. Scope of responsibility to include: Coat, Prepress, Print, PWL, Slitting, IML/Cut & Stack, Quality and Warehouse & Distribution. Although some of these areas have direct line management, outside a normal day shift pattern who report directly to this role.

Role and Responsibilities:

This role will take a leadership position and ensure that all aspects of FOCUS objectives are managed within the specific shift. This role also encompasses the following FOCUS functions: -

First for Safety

  • Ensure all Health & Safety rules are adhered to on shift
  • Accident Investigation
  • Lead Housekeeping and 5S Initiatives and audits
  • Complete Safety Audits and correct any issues
  • Report all safety issues through the HOT process, and ensure they are closed off quickly and effectively
  • Participate in Risk Assessments
  • Ensure compliance to all Statutory regulations

Operational Efficiency

  • Understand & manage the main operations Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) Throughput, Utilisation and Changeover Time.
  • Ensure that Short Interval Management (SIM) Boards are completed and act on any issues
  • Identification & implementation of cost reduction ideas
  • Implement Lean Initiatives - Quick Changeover, Continuous Improvement (KAIZEN), Waste Improvement & Elimination, Standard Work and Quality Improvement
  • Ensure accurate and consistent data collection through the Mytron System
  • Work as required on Print, Prepress, PWL, Slitting and IML/Cut & Stack to support the customer

Customer Service

  • Check & Report Daily Schedule – Conformance to Plan (CtP)
  • Work with Customer Service and planning to ensure that the plan is effectively delivered to meet the customers’ delivery dates and quantities.
  • Manage run lengths to ensure that all overs are less than 10% to avoid Aged and Obsolete stock
  • Work with the Warehouse to ensure that all deliveries are ready to be picked for dispatch, and Raw Material is available for Print
  • Communicate effectively with all departments to ensure that each area is aware of any issues that could affect deliveries to customer schedule

Utilisation of Resources

  • Be seen as a ‘Waste Champion’ for your shift
  • Identify waste improvement opportunities and support ‘ZERO Flag’ and other waste improvement initiatives
  • Work actively with Warehouse to ensure that all Raw Material is used effectively and Return to Stock (RTS) Reels are managed
  • Ensure accurate and consistent data collection through the Mytron System

Superior Quality

  • Ensure all Quality standards are adhered to on shift
  • Responsible for the Analyses of Quality performance data and corrective action implementation.
  • Responsible for the determination of root cause of consumer complaints and quality incidents and corrective action implementation. Responsible for effecting improvements to the quality system.
  • Implement plans to solve quality concerns or escalate
  • Review data trends and implement corrective actions where requiredPeople Management & Development
  • Responsible for the capability development of the team - manage training needs
  • Manage Absence and Return to Work (RTW) Interviews
  • Organise manning, overtime and holidays for members of the shift as required
  • Responsible for all aspects of discipline
  • Openly encourage improvement suggestions
  • Set Training & Flexibility Plan
  • Run Team Meetings, and attend morning FOCUS meeting and report daily performance and issues
  • Communicate Regularly with Team - Implement Team boards and utilise to drive continuous improvement
  • Support the Production Manager and stand in as and when required. Any other duties that may be required by the business

Education / Experience Required:


  • At least 2 years operations management experience with direct responsibility for a cross functional team.
  • MUST HAVE Print and/or Packaging experience
  • Experience of the implementation and management of Health & Safety & Environmental standards
  • Experience of implementation and management of Quality standards.
  • Experience of implementing lean manufacturing principles
  • Communicate effectively to all levels of the organisation
  • Evidence of implementation of continuous improvement initiatives
  • Experience of People development and performance management
  • Computer Literate


  • An accredited management course to NVQ3
  • Practical Problem Solving / Lean Principles
  • Knowledge of production and maintenance techniques, tools and processes and their implementation


  • Up to £33,000 including Shift Allowance
