CV Checklist

Use these handy tips to check your CV to help you get through to the interview stage where you get the real opportunity to sell yourself to the employer. If you can tick off the following, your chances will be greatly increased to get that all important interview:

Personal Details

This means your name, address, phone numbers and email address. Make it easy for the reader to contact you.

Profile and or Achievements

For every job you could be up against hundreds of other candidates so you need to make sure you stand out. Employers don’t just buy skills they buy achievements, so show how you have made your previous company money and resolved any problems through quantifiable statements that can be backed up at interview.

Work Experience

List your most recent job first as it is the most relevant, continuing in reverse chronological order. Describe your job in short straightforward sentences, highlighting your key achievements.

Education

List brief details of your academic and professional qualifications along with the grades you attained. If you someone looking for their first job since leaving education should list their education above their work experience.

References

It’s not necessary to list your referee’s on your CV but always write that references are available on request. Don’t forget to ask your referee for permission before you nominate them as reference.

Presentation

Keep your CV to 2 pages. Employers will spend only 10-20 seconds scanning your CV so make sure it is clutter free and easy to read. Use short sentences and make sure all your achievements are clearly signposted.

Keywords/ Relevance

As most CV’s are now received electronically, a lot of employers and recruiters will use specific software to evaluate CV’s. Make sure you have read the advert or job description and you have identified what key skills they are looking for. Use these keywords throughout your CV at least 3-4 times as this will increase your chances of getting through the first round.
